America's representative democratic system greatly depends on the strength of its institutions. Recently, these institutions have been challenged by unparalleled partisan quarreling, lack of accountability and transparency, questionable lobbying practices, and an explosion in financial contributions that reduce fairness and competitiveness in the electoral system. Meanwhile, the public is gradually losing trust in the country's institutions and its ability to achieve substantial reform. CED offers recommendations that seek to maintain and improve democratic institutions in the United States.
