On Monday, February 1, 2010 CED, America’s Edge and Winning Beginning NY, hosted the invitation only Legislative and Business Champions for New York’s Youngest Citizens luncheon forum in Albany, NY. Funding for this forum was provided by the Birth to Five Policy Alliance.
The event featured remarks from speakers Senator Velmanette Montgomery, Chair of Children and Families Committee; Kim Jasmin, Vice President, Northeast Region Community Relations Manager, JP Morgan Chase Foundation; Michael Mandel, Editor-in-chief, Visible Economy LLC; F. CED continued its effort to involve Mississippi business leaders in discussions about the importance of early childhood education to the future of their state on Friday, January 22 at the Jackson Convention Complex. In partnership with the Mississippi Economic Council's (MEC) Leadership Mississippi program, CED convened over 150 Leadership Mississippi participants and local civic leaders for a half-day forum to update them on what steps are being taken by the private-sector driven Mississippi Building Blocks and other leading early childhood education initiatives and programs in Mississippi. The forum was made possible with a generous grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Key Fox Cities and Green Bay area business leaders heard about the benefits of early care and education and the current status of early childhood programming in Wisconsin. In small groups participants discussed ways local companies can 1) support working parents by providing them with information about local early childhood resources and programming 2) partner with other entities within the community to strengthen investments in young children 3) help guarantee that the necessary local and state level policies are enacted to ensure that quality early learning opportunities are available to all of Wisconsin's children.

CED and the Mother's in Business initiative of the Columbia Women in Business Club at Columbia University hosted the business-led dinner forum What's Good For Kids Is Good For Business. The event took place at the Italian Academy at Columbia University on Monday, April 13.
The forum's keynote speaker, Rick Lazio, Managing Director, J.P. Morgan Asset Management - Global Real Assets at JP Morgan Chase & Co., is a CED trustee. He discussed JP Morgan Chase's philanthropic investments in early literacy and school readiness and provided a business perspective on why high quality early learning programs are essential to the success of our nation's economic growth and competitiveness.

CED, Manpower Inc., and the Partnership for Wisconsin's Economic Success convened an influential group of Milwaukee business leaders for the Business Champions for Wisconsin's Youngest Citizens breakfast forum at Manpower headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
During this forum, key Milwaukee area business leaders engaged in a discussion on the benefits of investing in early education, received information about the current status of early childhood programming in Wisconsin, and were encouraged to advocate for improved state policies and to participate in designing locally sustainable solutions.

Key business leaders from across Mississippi gathered at the Jackson Marriot to help unveil Mississippi Building Blocks, a statewide plan for early childhood education. This is an extremely important step in Mississippi, where there is no statewide pre-kindergarten program. The forum, which was hosted by the Mississippi Economic Council, Momentum Mississippi, and Leadership Mississippi drew almost 800 people.
CED President Charles Kolb participated in a panel discussion at the Mississippi Building Blocks Forum providing a national perspective on how business leaders across the county are supporting efforts to improve early childhood education. Additional speakers included Mississippi Governor Haley

CED, Pew Charitable Trusts, and United Ways in Kentucky, New Mexico, New York, and South Carolina Galvanize Local Business Leaders
In Kentucky
Over the past several months CED and the Pew Charitable Trusts have partnered with the United Way of Kentucky and the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence to host 12 regional events promoting the importance of early education. The events co-hosted by the local United Ways were focused on increasing business awareness of the return on investment in high quality pre-k education. The program also promoted Strong Start Kentucky which is seeking expansion of quality early care and education programs to all Kentucky children. The over 400 individuals who attended the meetings included business leaders, early childhood professionals, Prichard Committee members and public school leaders.

CED, in partnership with Pre-K for All DC, convened Washington, D.C. business, government, and non-profit leaders for a discussion entitled Quality Investments in Early Childhood Education. CED President Charles Kolb, Federal City Council Chairman Terrence C. Golden, PNC President Michael Herrald, and Chamber of Commerce President Barbara Lang, co-hosted the breakfast forum which took place December 10.
CED Trustee Robert Dugger, who recently co-founded the Partnership for America's Economic Success, served as the keynote speaker and emphasized the urgent need to invest in early care and education in these challenging economic times.

| Poverty Day participants discover first hand what high quality early education looks like during a visit to the Clayton Early Learning facility |
CED sponsored a day-long session on children in poverty for the fifty future community leaders enrolled in the Denver Metro Chamber's 2009 Leadership program. The forum highlighted poverty among children ages 0-5 years. CED Trustee Barbara Grogan, Chairman Emeritus of Western Industrial Contractors, opened the event by reminding participants of the active role Colorado business leaders have played in the past to support the state's children and urged them to continue this legacy. Other speakers included Barbara O'Brien, Lieutenant Governor of Colorado, and Jenifer Stedron, Program Manager-Education Department, National Conference of State Legislatures.
