On June 17, CED and the Steuben Child Care Project co-hosted a forum entitled Business Champions for Early Learning in Corning, New York. The event informed local business leaders on the economic benefit of investing early childhood education, and featured remarks from Carla Hibbard, of the Steuban Child Care Project, Mary Shaheen of the United way of New York State, and CED's Michael Petro.

On June 22, 2010 CED co-hosted, in partnership with the Penfield Children’s Center, a kick-off event for Step Up Milwaukee!, a new, collaborative initiative funded by the Herzfeld Foundation that aims to improve early childcare and early child learning in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The two-part event gathered over 90 Milwaukee business leaders, policy makers, education providers, child development specialists and other field experts in order to discuss the current state of early childhood education in Wisconsin, and the ways in which Step Up Milwaukee! might be most effective in galvanizing the larger Milwaukee community to solve the challenges of early care in their city.

During the week of March 22-26, CED co-sponsored a ten city tour across the state of Mississippi that highlighted how local business leaders can play a pivotal leadership role in the future of early education in their communities and their state. Funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and co-sponsored by CED and the Mississippi Economic Council, the Mississippi Next Steps Tour emphasized the correlation between early learning and economic development. Business leaders across the state re-affirmed their commitment to the young children in their communities, recognizing the importance of providing them the skills needed to be lifelong learners participating in a productive and competitive workforce.

In collaboration with Partnership for Wisconsin's Economic Success and United Way of Wisconsin and with generous support from the Birth to Five Policy Alliance, CED convened the Legislative and Business Forum: Early Childhood Investment on Wednesday, March 3 in Madison. The goal of this forum was to raise awareness among Wisconsin business and legislative leaders of the benefits of investing in early education and encourage them to improve state policies and participate in designing locally sustainable solutions. In particular, this forum highlighted the importance of instituting the YoungStars quality rating system in Wisconsin as a way to ensuring that more children have access to high quality early care and education program.

CED continued its effort to involve Mississippi business leaders in discussions about the importance of early childhood education to the future of their state on Friday, January 22 at the Jackson Convention Complex. In partnership with the Mississippi Economic Council's (MEC) Leadership Mississippi program, CED convened over 150 Leadership Mississippi participants and local civic leaders for a half-day forum to update them on what steps are being taken by the private-sector driven Mississippi Building Blocks and other leading early childhood education initiatives and programs in Mississippi. The forum was made possible with a generous grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

On November 4-5, 2009, CED joined an impressive group of sponsors including the Partnership for America’s Success and the W. K. Kellogg Foundation to co-host the launch of the New Mexico Early Childhood Development Partnership (NMECDP). This summit united business leaders from across New Mexico to discuss the importance of a high-quality and well-educated workforce through investment in early childhood programs. Nationally known and respected presenters shared the latest brain development research and discussed the economics of early childhood education. Attendees learned why quality early care and education is so important for New Mexico’s employers, economy, and community health. Speakers included: CED Trustee Robert H. Dugger, Managing Partner, Hanover Investment Group, LLC; New Mexico’s Lt. Governor Diane Denish; Anne Mosle, V.P. of Programs, W. K. Key Fox Cities and Green Bay area business leaders heard about the benefits of early care and education and the current status of early childhood programming in Wisconsin. In small groups participants discussed ways local companies can 1) support working parents by providing them with information about local early childhood resources and programming 2) partner with other entities within the community to strengthen investments in young children 3) help guarantee that the necessary local and state level policies are enacted to ensure that quality early learning opportunities are available to all of Wisconsin's children.

CED co-sponsored the Preparing for the New Century: Innovative Work and Family Strategies workshop June 3-4, 2009 at Cornell University. Michael Layman from the Society from Human Resources Management (SHRM), a CED Trustee organization, participated in a panel discussion on effective work-life policies. Other speakers included Barbara Gniewek, Principal and National Practice Leader, Deloitte & Touche; Cali Williams Yost, President & Founder, Work+Life Fit, Inc.; and Mildred Warner, Director of Graduate Studies; Professor in City and Regional Planning and Co-Director of Linking Economic Development and Child Care Research Project, Cornell University.
