Health Care, the Budget Deficit and the Economy
Tuesday, 14 April 2009
CED, working with graduate students from the University of Michigan Health Care and Life Science Club and Net Impact chapter, hosted a dinner event entitled "Health Care, the Budget Deficit, and the Economy." The event took place on April 14th at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

The event featured Joe Minarik, CED's Senior Vice President and Director of Research, as a keynote speaker. He discussed why CED believes the employer-based health insurance system is broken, how health care costs affect the U.S. economy, and why health care reform is desperately needed.

As a member of the panel, Joseph Swedish, President and CEO of Trinity Health, spoke about his experiences with the current health care system as the leader of a catholic organization that maintains hospitals and clinics in seven states across the country. His fellow panelists Laura Appel, Vice President of Federal Policy and Advocacy, Michigan Health and Hospital association and Dr. Steven Stein, Medical Director, Great Lakes Health Plan discussed Michigan's health care system issues, and touched on positive new developments in Medicaid and Medicare. The fourth panelist, the Honorable Alonzo McDonald, Former Chairman, Avenir Group Inc. and CED trustee gave a historical analysis of health care issues, and gave a rousing call for the graduate students attending to become involved in shaping the future of the reform debate.

CED has been involved in bringing new voices to the health care reform discussion for many years. We are very excited to have had the opportunity to bring an event to the University of Michigan, and to gather over 130 MBA, medical, and public policy graduate students to focus on health care reform. By giving graduate students the chance to engage with business and health care industry leaders at this event, CED is actively encouraging the next generation of business statesman to become involved in public policy reform.
